Vegetarian Eating in the Furano Area
Vegetarian travellers in rural Hokkaido run into the same wall repeatedly, which is that a dish can look entirely plant-based and still be built on dashi made from bonito. Vegetable tempura, miso soup, a bowl of noodles in clear broth: all of them commonly carry fish stock, and nobody thinks to mention it because in Japan it is not considered a meat ingredient at all.
Indian and Nepalese kitchens are a different proposition. Vegetarian cooking is not an accommodation there, it is half the tradition, and the stock is vegetable or nothing at all. Nepal Dining is in Nakafurano, about six kilometres from Furano Ski Resort and around fifteen minutes by car, and vegetarian dishes are on the standard menu rather than hidden behind a special request.
The Vegetarian Dishes on Our Menu
Mix Vegetable Curry is the everyday choice, mild enough for children and made with seasonal vegetables. Mix Vegetable Soup Curry is the Hokkaido style, a thinner spiced broth rather than a thick sauce, and it is the one to order after a cold day outside. Both come with rice or naan.
Momo, the Nepalese steamed dumpling, comes with either a chicken or a vegetable filling — ask for the vegetable one when you order. That also applies to the Momo and Vegetable Soup Curry, which is the dish most likely to be new to you and the one people come back for.
On the bread side, Plain Naan, Garlic Naan and Cheese Naan are all baked to order in the tandoor. Rice is available on its own. Between a vegetable curry, a naan, some momo and a soup curry to share, a vegetarian table eats as well here as anyone else does, which is not something we can say about every restaurant in the valley.
Vegan, Allergies and Nut-Free: Please Just Ask
Vegetarian and vegan are not the same request, so here is the honest detail. Our standard naan dough is made with dairy and egg, and several curries are finished with cream or yoghurt — that is what gives Butter Chicken and Tikka Masala their texture. So the default versions of those are not vegan.
What we can do is make them vegan on request. Tell us when you order and the kitchen will prepare your dishes — naan included — without dairy or egg. The same goes for allergies and for nut-free cooking: ask our staff, tell them exactly what you need to avoid, and they will work with the kitchen. We would far rather have that conversation before the food is cooked than after it reaches the table.
Spice Levels and Ordering Tips
Spice is adjustable and the default is milder than most visitors expect, because the majority of our regulars are local families. If you want it hot, say so, and if you are ordering for a mixed table with children, order the vegetable curry mild and let the adults add heat.
